How to split gas costs among friends

Estimate the fuel used for the full journey, add agreed shared expenses, then divide the total among the people who are paying. Decide whether the driver pays a share before you leave.

  1. Count the full journey

Include the drive home. Enter the complete route with Include return trip unchecked, or enter the one-way distance and check it to double the distance.

  2. Add agreed costs

Use your fuel economy and fuel price, then add tolls and parking once for the whole trip. GasSplit assumes the driver paid these costs.

  3. Choose who pays

Enter everyone in the car, including the driver. Everyone pays includes the driver; Passengers only divides the cost among the other people.

Gas cost per person: compare two ways to split

A 150-mile drive each way is 300 miles in total. At 30 MPG (US) and USD 3.50 per gallon, the estimated fuel cost is USD 35.00. Four people travel: one driver and three passengers.

The same USD 35.00 fuel cost, with four people in the car
Who paysEach passenger paysDriver’s shareDriver collects
Everyone paysUSD 8.75USD 8.75USD 26.25
Passengers onlyUSD 11.67 / 11.67 / 11.66USD 0.00USD 35.00

The passenger-only amounts differ by one cent so they add up to exactly USD 35.00. Neither sharing rule is automatically fair for every group; agree on one together.

Enter 300 with Include return trip unchecked, or enter 150 and check it. Add tolls and parking once, for the whole trip; they follow the same sharing rule as fuel.

Questions about splitting gas money

Formulas & examples

How much gas money will my trip cost?

Divide total miles by MPG, then multiply by price per US gallon. For 300 miles at 30 MPG and USD 3.50 per gallon, fuel costs USD 35.00. Four people sharing equally pay USD 8.75 each. Actual fuel use can differ.

Should the driver pay for gas?

Agree before the trip. Everyone pays includes the driver; Passengers only gives the driver no share of fuel, tolls or parking. See how to split gas money fairly for examples.

Does the number include the driver?

Yes. Enter everyone in the car. Everyone pays gives the driver a share; Passengers only splits all included costs among the other people.

What is included in the estimate?

Fuel estimated from distance, consumption and your fuel price, plus any tolls and parking you enter. It assumes the driver paid all included costs. Maintenance, depreciation and electricity are excluded.

Which vehicles and MPG units are supported?

Our directory uses FuelEconomy.gov US-market data. Choose MPG (US) or MPG (UK); their gallon sizes differ. Manual entry also supports L/100km and km/L. Single-fuel gasoline and diesel vehicles, including conventional hybrids, can use a published EPA combined estimate. Not every car or market is covered.

Are my trips saved?

Trips and bills stay in page memory. Only a car you explicitly save and unit preferences are stored in this browser. See privacy notes.
